ANGLO-SAXON OXFORDSHIREIron Age OxfordDuring the Iron Age, Oxford was part of a frontier zone between three tribal groups: the Dobunni, Atrebates and Catuvellauni. A middle Iron Age settlement has been excavated at Whitehouse Road dating from the third to first centuries BC. Aerial surveys and excavation have also identified three middle Iron Age farmsteads and enclosures at Port Meadow. Thus the archaeological evidence to date suggests sparse agricultural occupation of the Oxford area during the Iron Age. |
